OK, I just did the upgrade to the firmware recommended above, how do I get rid of the preflash...so that it only fires once...would centered or spot metering also help the orioginal symptoms or dark pictures?

I don't know, has anyone tried this?

The preflash is only applicable to the manual mode! IE use the Guide Number (ie divide the GN by distance to find aperture) or the flashes's own sensor for the automatic mode (ie not TTL anymore)...

Jazz

If you're a real novice I don't recommend you to do this, anyway to turn the camera on manual:
1. Turn the mode switch on the left of the camera to PASM
2. While holding in the fuction button turn the wheel next to the shutter until it cycle to M.

The camera is now on manual... and the pre-flash is off!

Hmmm, just tried that and it didn't work...Is there something I have to set in addition to making sure the camera is in manual mode? I still get two flashes.

Jazz

It looks like your 3600HS, unlike my 5600HS, can't be put on manual. It's not the camera fault, but the lack of manual control on the 3600HS! You need a flash with manual control: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...essage=2161937

Have you check with the camera's built-in flash with the new A1v122u firmware?

I thaught the 3600HS could be turned to manual, you set the zoom to be manual but it still preflashes at that setting? I was hoping to use it to trigger some studio flashes with it.

Any ideas, most of my reading seem to point towards the fact the you can get rid of the preflash.

Jazz, NHL,
I understand that you are talking about the external Minolta flash operation.
If you set the flash to manual in the camera menu , will it make the external Minolta flash behave in manual and no preflash (I guess so, worth a try)?

Camera in Rec mode: Menu > Basic > flashcontrol > select Full, ¼ or 1/16

The on board flash won’t preflash and can trigger studio strobes as expected.

PS: Oh ... I guess that it has to do with firmware 2.0 on D7 ??

You do not need 2.0 for turning off the preflash. I have used this version in the studio long before 2.0 was available... The PCT-100 is only a high voltage adapter working through the camera's hotshoe!

Quote:
This is the firmware version that is currently packaged with the PCT-100. Firmware A1v122u enables external flash usage via PC Flash Adapter PCT-100. If you already have version A1v122u, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
Have you tried with the built-in on manual?
