I had a long discussion with Padeye regarding this issue back when 122u came out. Padeye prefered the camera's built-in over my use of the 5600HS since it's lighter with the camera's built-in while the 5600HS recycle faster! They both do not pre-flash. KCan, you've made an adapter for your Metz as well before the D7i or the 2.0 firmware came out!
I'm pretty sure now that the 3600HS can not be put on manual, and even if Jazz upgrade to 2.0 he'll still pre-flash with his 3600 with the upgrade! (ie this flash only work in auto).

Jazz

Try the D7's built-in to trigger the slaves or connect the sync cord to an FS1100 adapter!

Yeah, I made it even before the PCT-100 / 122 firmware precisely because the on board flash preflash can't be disabled.

OK, I am getting even more confused here, some people are saying yes it can be turned off, other say no...I have tried putting the camera into Manual mode and no luck it still pre-flashes... :-( ...can someone post the exact direction for making the prelash to be turned off on the 3600HS using the 122u.

Thanks guys

Jazz and all,
Let me recap from what I understand:
- The 3600HSD works only in auto mode , and canít be put on manual operation, so the 3600HSD can not have the preflash disabled , no matter what.
- The 5600HSD can operate in manual mode, and the 5600HSD can be used as manual flash without preflash
- The on board flash of D7 can operate in manual mode (ie no preflash) at full, ľ, or 1/16 power if you have firmware 122 installed, so it (the on board flash) can be used to trigger (normal) studio strobe.

Is this rite?

Jazz, this is another affirmation leading to the conclusion that the 3600HSD will always preflash and can not operate in manual mode , as NHL point out above:

http://webpages.charter.net/bbiggers...dy_d7_faq.html

Quote:
3) On the D7 and D5, The New Minolta 5600HS(D) flash can be set to manual mode and will emit just one flash that can be used to trigger slaves. The screen will remain bright. The Minolta 3600HS(D) which is the only other currently availible flash with full support does not have a manual mode and will always emit the pre-flash and so can't be used.

Everything is right except for ľ, or 1/16 power. The fractional output with the D7's built-in is only available on the CD upgrade. With the A1v122u firmware download it's always on full power...

Your other choice for external studio strobes is the FS-1100... and you don't have to pirate the firmware anymore!

The current Minolta hot shoe adapter FS-1100 works with the 121 firmware. You can combine the FS-1100 (about $30) with a hot shoe to PC sync adapter (about $20) to trip external flashes using the PC socket. However the display will be dark in manual mode with the FS-1100 unless you pirate the 122 firmware.

I think one of the above statements is incorrect but I am not sure...I have the 122u firmware and I cannot get the onboard flash to fire in manual mode...I can't find the setting in any of the menus...Is it hidden somewhere?
