Default Metz/Sigma/Canon for CANON 10D ?

Who can help :-) ???

Metz 54 Z 3 with SCA Euro 299 (E-TTL compatible)
Sigma 500 Super DG Euro 275 (E-TTL compatible)
Canon 550 EX Euro 399 (E-TTL)

Which is best suited for 10D ?

I think, CANON's prices are a bit oversized :-----)

Advantage Metz: usable for ALL cams (changable SCA Euro 40.-), but not necessary

I use a Sigma 500 Super for my Pentax film camera, and it's a wonderful unit. It has TTL, manual, strobe, and standby...it's invaluable as an AF-assist device too. My only gripe is that it shoots and shoots, and suddenly, it will not, having exhausted the batteries....there's literally no indication that your batteries are dying..i.e. longer cycle times, dimmer flash, etc...it just plain dies! :?

The only difference with the DG Super is that it is a flash for digital SLRs, so it has E-TTL (Canon) or D-TTL (Nikon). I'd say get it if you're on a budget. The 550 EX is a great unit too, and meshes perfectly with the 10D. Think of the 500 DG as a 550 EX clone...a friend of mine actually thought I was using a 550 until he inspected my 500 Super up close.

I have the 10D as well, and am vaguely thinking about a flash (after the tripod.) Does the Sigma 500 Super do anything the 550EX doesn't? Or visa-versa?

Remember, one of the best feature of the Canon line is their wireless flash system, so make sure it's compatible in this mode as well: you'll get multi-ratio and Flash Exposure priority (with the AE button) as well all through TTL without any sync cord! 8)

I've looked at the Sigma for the D7's which also have the wireless system, and they seemed to work just fine for the Minolta's. I believe the only feature missing from the cheaper ST model is the modeling light, ie when you stop down the lens on the 10D, the flashes emit a series of continuous pulse so one can evaluate the lights balance and their overcasting shadows...

I believe the Metz won't do the wireless (KCan can fill us in here), but they are outstanding otherwise...

You guys just gave me an idea, since I've already got the 550EX. The Sigma would do me really good for thoses remote slaves. I can almost get two for the price of one Canon (and from B+H too!):

Go with Canon to avoid problems, if you can afford 550EX for remote slave, try the 420EX.

Well if I went with the 420EX, I have a problem already: It does not support modeling light, has a smaller GN, and no button for overide if used on manual as a primary flash!

Now let's think about this: For the same price as an ST-E2 slave controller one can buy the Sigma 500 Super DG that is a clone of the 550EX (with modeling light as well as Flash Exposure Bracketing) and might also work with my Minolta (or a future Nikon :lol. What's wrong here? May be I should buy TWO! :P :P :P
