First, Steve's site has a glossary that includes a one-line definition of GN.

One of my favorite e-books on basic photography is:

http://www.camerahobby.com/EBook-TOC.htm

It has a chapter on flash (chapter 9) and chapter 9 has a subsection "flash, technical," that explains how to use guide numbers. Be careful, because sometimes a GN is given in meters and sometimes in feet. As a general rule of thumb, when I use a sto-fen diffuser or the like, I divide the GN by 2. I also do the same for bounce flash. One nice thing about a digital camera is that you can see immediately whether your light setting was right, and adjust accordingly.
