I have a 20D Canon, Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2, Speedlite 580 and a Sekonic hand-held meter (flash). My setup is the 580 is off camera and I use the ST-E2 to fire the flash. I need to know how to meter the subject in full manual mode. Can I use the camera to meter or just the Sekonic hand held? I am not sure the settings for the flash and the camera. Does anyone have a step by step process to give me a correct exposure.

Thanks

If you use the camera to meter then it's really not manual is it?

Automatic mode: (Camera does the metering even on manual)
-> When the camera is on manual, but the flash is on automatic (i.e. E-TTL II) the camera will expose the flash correctly through the ST-E2. You just have to set the shutter speed and aperture manually on the camera initially:
1. The camera will preflash the 580 first when you press the shutter
2. It'll then meter this beam and will send the correct exposure to the flash to expose correctly the next time around
3. The 580 fires a 2nd time for the real image with the correct exposure

Fully Manual mode:
(Metering input manually from the Sekonic)
If you want to be entirely on manual then set both the camera and the flash to manual (i.e. No E-TTL):
1. First fire the flash manually at the ratio you want using the test button
2. Use your Sekonic to meter @ the subject
3. Transpose the reading, mostly aperture (since you've already pick a shutter) from the Sekonic to the 20D
