I am still hemming and hawing :? over which flash unit to buy for my new Pentax *ist DL. I ordered the Sigma EF-500 Super and then cancelled the order because I acted impulsively and then realized I had just spent $237.00 on a flash unit that exceeded my needs. I just need a good flash for night shots and dark rooms, etc. - nothing fancy with lots of bells and whistles. So I am now looking at one of these:

(1) Sigma EF-500 DG ST (non-Super): $134.95:

(2) Sunpak Mz 440AF: $84.95:

(3) Promaster 5550 DX: $159.00 (including Pentax module)

Thanks,
Justinian

Justinian-

If you are not going to cover long distances, the Sunpak should work fine and offer TTL features.

Justinian-

Better do some more research! It look like the D/DS/DS2 all work with TTL, but the DL is not mentioned, so please be sure to check.

Justinian,

I'm going thru the same dilema with my KM 5D. I actually bought the ProMaster 5550DX with the Minolta module and didn't like it at all. First, it was as big as a house, and secondly (and more importantly) it wasn't compatible with the 5D even though the salesman and the instructions said it was. I would have to "fool" the flash by setting the camera on "red eye" to get a decent exposure. But it was still hit or miss.

I'm actually going in the other direction and think that maybe some bells and whistles would be nice.
