Hi, I have a Nikon D50 and am thinking of purchasing a Tamron 90mm Macro lens for photographing insects etc.

Do I need a special Flash setup as I want to handhold the camera if possible ?

Thanks for your help

There's varying opinions on flash for macro work.

John Shaw's "Closeups in Nature" (I'd certainly recommend it for a practical guide on things macro in the field) recommends a cheap low-power flash (or multiple if you really need it), and a home-made bracket to be able to position it. You really don't want to mount the flash on the hot-shoe since you'll probably get shadows from the lens if you try, and may not be close enough to the subject anyway. So at least an extension cable for the flash is really a good idea.

He really disses the ring-lights as not mimicing anything in nature and producing flat shadowless images, though I find catchlights in eyes to be pretty unnatural too (we're just used to seeing them).

TTL metering may not work so great at macro distances; you'll probably have to dial in some exposure compensation that experience will help with. Or you can set it manual and adjust according to the situation/distance/f-stop. You want to make sure these are pretty simple to set on your flashes, but that's not generally a problem.

Good luck!
