I am pretty green when it comes to my 580 ex. I have figured out how to bounce/angle the light using the catchlight card, and am happy with the results. Except, I feel like I get "stuck" taking horizontal shots because its impossible to bounce the flash when I turn the camera vertically. I'm sure there's some gadget or accessory I'm supposed to buy now to combat this? I have a 20D.

Stroboframe make a flash bracket that will let you flip your flash vertically when you turn your camera to portrait orientation:

The head of the 580 can tilt and swivel. If you've got white walls or ceiling you should be able to hold the camera in portrait orientation and tilt/swivel the flash head so that it bounces off the wall or ceiling and provide nice soft lighting.

Along with the Stroboframe bracket you will need a TTL cord from camera to flash. I use a Stroboframe Press-T bracket. It works really good and gets the flash head 10 inches above my lens. What is nice about the Press-T or a Pro-T bracket is that you hold the camera and not the flash bracket. Much easier then holding on to the flash bracket. Steadier too!!!
