I'd try a different set of known good batteries, too (preferrably, fully charged, high capacity NiMH Batteries). Voltage problems can cause strange symptoms.

Ditto for the Memory Card (sometimes a bad card can pull too much current, interfering with a camera's operation).

Hopefully, it's something simple so that you don't need to send it in for repair.

btw - is there a firmware update ?

Not that I'm aware of.

Added: I'd make sure to try using all switches, buttons, etc. too Sometimes a switch contact that's stuck (or has a little oxidation under it) can cause strange problems.

I use 4 pcs UNIROSS Ni-MH 2100mAh , and the xD picture card is 256 Olympus .. . ..

i'll buy a set of new batteries, and i'll use the original xD provided with the camera

but i'll do that after those 2 days without power
