I am looking for a compact camera that can do a lot and I have really liked what I have read about the F30 and its super CCD sensor. That is with one exception, some of the reviews make it sound that it is tough to get good photos with it in outdoor light conditions using full automatic. This is a concern for me because I don't want to always have to use a manual mode in those conditions or photoshop the contrast curve.

Can anyone that owns the camera comment on this? Are these concerns overblown or legitimate. Also any other thoughts on the overall performance of the camer would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

All cameras have strengths and weaknesses that reviewers pick up on. The F30 is no exception. It is; however, highly regarded. The F30's problem is that it can overexpose outdoor shots in full auto. The overexposeure, when it occurs, is slight to moderate and no shot is really ruined.

The solution is to use Manual mode, set the EV to -1/3, and leave everything else on auto. Manual on the F30 is really a program mode (and they should have called it Program rather than Manual). Reset EV back to 0 for indoor shots. There is a dedicated EV button on the back so this is easy to do. Not quite full auto, but pretty close.

I'm very happy with my F30. The images are superb, the LCD is big and bright, battery life is excellent and the camera is easy and fun to use.

Good luck in whatever decision you make.

Here is a F30 3MP macro sample shot with EV -1/3. Pic has been resized to 2MP so that it would meet attachment size max.

ISO 800
Exposure time: 1/180 sec
Shutter speed: 1/185 sec
F-stop: f/3.40
Aperture value: f/3.40
Focal length: 12.20mm
Flash: did not fire/suppressed
