Default how can i take decent pics in low light with a 3800

With difficulty - BIG external flash!! Your cam is 100ASA only. But look here:

It really depends on what you are shooting. The main issue with the cam in low light is the long exposure times required to get a decent pic. This makes it almost mandatory that you use a tripod, and makes taking 'action' pic's a pain in the bum.

Why not take some practice shots, and delve into the manual mode settings, try playing with the exposure compensation (EV) and whitebalance.

Autofocus is the main issue with the cam in low light, but that's an issue with most camera's without a true manual mode im guessing
