Default Pictures thru a sports fence

I have been trying to take some baseball shots with my new 602. This is my first digital camera. I have been using 35mm Nikons. Is there anyway to trick the auto focus into ignoring the fence and concentrate on the players. Also, I find the manual mode a little hard to focus with the fence in the way. Thanks

Jim, here's what I do to get good sports shots, from best to worst:

1. Crack open the gate and shoot throught the opening, so there's no interference from the chain link fencing.
2. Move to where there isn't a fence, or where you can shoot over a 4 ft fence.
3. Place you lens right up to the fence, "in one of the holes", if you can.
4. Switch to manual focus (argh!).

Hopes this helps!
