Default s304 (3800) I/O errors

Perhaps you can help me?

I am the once proud owner of a Fuji Finepix S304 (3800) but have recently experienced some problems in downloading video and still images, of various resolution quality, to my PC, which is of ample specification and running XP.

I purchased the camera in late December 2002. In addition to the 16Mb card that I got with the camera, I bought an extra 128Mb, and then two further 64Mb cards during a month long trip in Australia. I started getting problems when attempting to download the video and still content of the full 128 Mb card. Half of the images and video were downloaded, but in non sequential order. I ruled out problems with that specific card, because of problems experienced with others. I acquired a power adaptor, as per camera specifications as I thought that battery power may be an issue, but this did not help. I then began to get USB and input errors.

The problem was intermittent but is now permanent, and manifests itself in the following ways. A standard windows grey box "I/O Error"error appears and/or the camera disappears from view from the drive list in the finepix viewer and is followed by a windows message explaining that "A USB device connected to the PC has malfunctioned".

The capacity of the PC has not altered. I read a previous entry in the user forum that suggested that BIOS upgrades are necessary on occasion but am not considering this as an option because the camera worked perfectly in the past and enabled me to download images and video off all cards.

I experience the same errors whichever of the 4 xd cards I use but have manged to download images from all of them.

I suspect that there is a fault with the USB cable, or connecting port on the camera. I will be attempting to rule out problems with my PC this weekend by using my Dad's PC to perform a test.

Any ideas?
