I am reading that many digital camera's fire a "preflash" before the actual flash (NOT the red eye reduction preflash) in order to set the white balance. Does the s5100 fire a pre-flash and how can I tell? I need to know in order to find an appropriate slave flash, as I do not want a slave that will fire on the preflash and then not show up on the exposure. I have read about this problem on many sites.

The S5100 does not. It uses the fact that you've selected (popped up) the flash to set the white balance to the flash. If you use a hotter slave, you can set a Custom White Balance that will be retained until you change it or reset it.
