I'm a newby to digital ,I have been using a Nikon 2100 with CF 1 memory card.

I just purchased a Fuji S5100. How durable are XD cards compared to CF 1?

Do I need to take any special precautions during activities such as kayaking ,

camping , or fishing?

I think xD cards are very durable. The problem is they're so small that they are easy to lose. I would worry more about my camera than my memory card if I were kayaking. or fishing (with waders on). If the memory card gets wet, it's likely your camera has taken a swim.

xD cards are extremely durable

i have used and abused my s7000 for over a year with no ill effects

a tip for use near water :

install the accessory lens adapter with a 55mm uv filter

place camera in an ordinary ziplock bag with lens sticking out

secure with rubber band

viola ! a splash proof fully funtional near pro snapshot camera !
