Haveing trouble, the S3 will not focus at the extream end from about 500mm on, My f5 has no trouble, and a sigma 170-500 works ok on the S3, Has anyone had any problems with long big glass and the s3?

sometimes the s3 gets awkward and decides not to focus. This is usually down to apperture so open up the shutter.It can also be be camera shake. Either way

Use a tripod - a big heavy one! Then hang your bag off the centre to weigh it down some more.

Don't use the max or minimum appertures. f4 to f5.6 is good up to 500mm

don't use too slow shutter speeds on long lenses.

Use spot metering.

Use a remote control or cable release

If one or more of these doesn't solve the problem then there's something wrong with the lens (assuming the camera is ok - and if you only get this with the long lens then its not the camera)
