I don't consider it really all that terrible. Useable in a pinch when needed
Total focal length is around 600mm (equivelent) taken with flash.

Straight image

Other than that just some minor cropping and resizing

My opinion on that is....if you are post processing....don't use the digital zoom, use your software to do that.

I agree. But since I've had the camera less than a week, I would shirking my responsibility by not testing each and every function. :|

Is that REALLY the best you can do with the digital zoom? I have the 9000, which everybody knows isn't as good as the 9100 (just kidding). I have taken pictures of our cat that we can see every individual hair. Surely if you try you can do better than this. I'm not advocating using the digital zoom all the time. But it's capable of doing much more than this.
