Only you can answer your own question as to whether you are still far away or not. Many people spend money on cameras that go way above and beyond their needs and as a result, they get frustrated and turned off by their equipment because it ends up being too complicated and complex to operate. As long as you are happy with the pictures you current camera(s) take and you don't feel the needs to experiment with Depth of Field, HDR processing (which will require some sort of exposure bracketing functionality), etc., you are good. When you wish you could make adjustments to the camera's settings (but unfortunately you can't because your camera is one of those fully automatic ones), then I think it's time to start looking for an upgrade (or may I say 'replacement' since having all the bells and whistles do not necessarily constitute an upgrade).
