Default UV Filter for S5000 -- newbie question

I am getting an S5000 and want to protect the lens. I have limited knowledge about cameras in general so I want to make sure before I order any accessories for the camera.

From what I gather, a UV filter for a lens is a good way to protect the lens, and has the added bonus of filtering UV light if needed. But it can be left on all the time. Is this correct?

Also, what size UV filter would I need? I believe the S5000 comes with a 55mm adapter ring, so should I get a 55mm UV filter? Will any 55mm UV filter do, like one I can find easily/cheaply on eBay? I really don't need to filter UV light just yet (shooting mainly indoors), I just want to protect the camera's lens from any scratches/etc. without degrading image quality.

Thanks alot.

I would highly recommand a GOOD BRANDED UV filter. Of course, it has to be 55mm threaded. Cokin, Hoya, Vivitar come to mind when I think about good brands...
