Default I am at a loss......

Can anyone tell a difference in quality between the 6 vs 3 mp setting? I sure can't after taking 2000+ pictures with my s5000.

Try taking pictures of the moon, then go and post-process them. There's more detail at 6 than it is at 3.

Try taking some pictures of a cat with sharpening off in both cases. Then have a peek at the fur @ X400% in Photoshop. Of course, if you're only ever going to print 6X4's and no crops - don't worry about it! VOX

Ah, another test... go grab a copy of Geniune Fractals (if possible) and do this:
- take a picture at 3Mp then enlarge it at 200% with GF
- take a picture at 6Mp then enlarge it at 100% with GF

Now compare
