Is there any benefit to shootin at a lower resolution? I mean is there much difference in IQ? will I get a better less noisy shot but lose detail if I were to zoom in?

I think what we're saying here is that, as you increase resolution above about 5MP, you'll just end up with a more detailed view of the blur caused by lens shortcomings. (Of course, for P&S cameras with extra high quality, extra wide aperture lenses (f2, say) and/or extra-large sensors, this won't apply.)

Most of the posts in this thread are reporting that the images seem to be subjectively crisper at the middling resolutions. But by all means, try it for yourself!
