My wonderful s5000 now shuts down by itself at will, sometimes immediately (always after kindly retracting the lens), sometimes not at all until I tell it to. Took it to Ritz camera shop where I got it and had bought extended warranty, they said ok, we'll send it in and maybe in a month you'll get it back. They also went to setup menu and reset everything, it worked fine there in the shop. I took it home. Next day it was back to it's tricks, my attempts to reset don't help. Help!

A couple of things to check
First the autoshut off time. I had a s7000 doing the same thing and for some reason the shut down time was very short.

Try a different set of batteries and be sure they have charged for a long time. I have seen a weak set of batteries do this also.

You have probably tried both of these???
