when i turn the camera on, on the ldc screen there is a hand and an exclamation point ! what are these for? I didnt find anything in the manuel to tell mewhat it was unless i overlooked it

That is a warning that the currently selected shutter speed is too slow for taking good hand held shots. It is just a warning. It will not prevent you from taking a picture. As a general rule of thumb, I read somewhere that 1/focal length was a good yardstick for handheld picture taking. So, for instance, since the full zoom on your 5100 is equivalent to a 370 mm lens on the 35mm camera, 1/400 of a second (or close to it) would be a minimum shutter speed to consider for a handheld shot at full zoom. As you zoom in, the image is magnified, but so is any movement.

Yep, JP is correct. It's the "camera shake waring". See the bottom half of page 9in your owner's manual. It's also discused on p111.

In addition to JP's note about the 370mm equivalent, the digital zoom portion bumps that up to 1332mm equivalent in low res or about 518 in 2M mode.
