On page 57 of the PDF user manual there is information about choosing different auto focus modes. I think the default mode is "Multi" which averages the entire shooting area. I wonder if you changed it to "Center" if that would give you greater control on your macro shots. I don't do macro photography, but this might be something for you to try.

Focus should be set on Center. I always get about 2 feet away and zoom in till pic is composed and shoot. No blur ever.
