I just got back from an 8 day trip to Disneyland for their 50th Anniversary. I was using a 1GB Memory Stick in my Sony DSC-W1, and a 1GB xD card in my new F10. Each day, I took about 1.5GB total of images.I absolutely HATE the F10 when it comes to all the stupid plug in cables and adapters just to charge or download pics, but I could not find an external charger or memory card reader that worked for me before I left on vacation.Anyway, I had the F10 plugged in to my Powerbook and the drive was mounted on the desktop, but I was not accessing it.* I decided to plug in the power to the adapter before starting to download. Doing so caused the camera to swtich in to a different charge mode, and I got the warning about disconnecting a drive without ejecting it first. I did not bother with it any more that night, and let it charge instead. The next morning, the camera could not access the memory card, and I also cannot read it on a PC or Mac -- and running PhotoRescue (Mac) or Digital Image Recovery (PC) on the xD card has not found any files. There were hundreds of photos on this card from that day, now seemingly lost. The xD format appears more fragile than anything I have had before -- I've previously used (extensively; more so than the xD so far)* Memory Stick Pro and SD cards at 1GB size with never a problem. I am guessing it is just the Fuji design.Anyone have any suggestions? [This BB does not work with Safari; so it merges all my paragraphs into one long one; sorry about that. Can't do much about incompatible software.]

Sorry about your problems, Allen. Have you obtained a card reader that accepts xD cards, or are you still using the camera as card reader? If the latter, I recommend you find, buy or borrow a reader. No promises. It's quite possible that your pictures are gone without a trace. But if there's something still there that can be recovered, I think you'll have a better chance with an external reader. The camera may not let your image recovery software have access to low-level data on the card.

For what it's worth, I don't think the problem is necessarily specific to the xD card. All types of flash memory cards experience some percentage of failure. I haven't seen anything indicating an unusually high failure rate for xD cards. However, I think 1 GB cards are a recent development in the xD universe, so there may be some bugs that haven't yet been worked out.

Good luck on recovering your images.

DataRescue (Mac and PC versions available) did the trick, reading it through the camera -- the xD memory reader won't handle the 1GB, apparently.* Already toasted the card the same way two more times when trying to load the update (1.02) on the F10 -- seems if you every power down at all incorrectly, the card is hosed.* This does not/did not happen on two different Sony's and Mem Stick, my Casio on SD, or my Compact Flash Nokia.* So maybe it's not xD, and just a Fuji deal.* Still, very annoying.

Glad you were able to recover your pictures. Any chance you can return the card? It may be defective.

Not sure about a return, but I might check -- got it via www.dealram.com search from ZipZoomFly.com with free 2nd day air (I've used them several times in the past for other great deals).*
