Wrong! My computer is an older model that only has USB 1.1, and it downloads from my 9000 and my 5100 just fine. USB 2.0 is backward compatible. So your suggestion I'm afraid is invalid.

I wonder if it's possible that your USB cable is damaged. You might consider trying to download your photos to a different computer and see what happens. Also, the card reader really is a good choice. There are some authors who suggest that the card reader is a safer way to transfer your images anyway.

Have you tried plugging in some other USB device into theport you are using for the camera? (to see if your pc recognises the other device or rejects that as well)

Like to know how old your computer is?

1.1 Usb will not work on 2.0 devices.

2.0 Usb will read 1.1 devices.

It looks like I'm going to have to repeat a previous reply to this issue. USB 2.0 devices ARE backward compatible with USB 1.1. I have an older computer with just USB 1.1, and I can connect my Fuji 9000 directly and download from it. I don't really this is a USB compatibility issue.
