I checked out Fuji's website to see if Type M XD cards would work on my Finepix S5100. The chart says it will take 16MB-512MB XD w/o any problems, but it says "*9 Type M not recommended for movie recording" under the 1GB XD card.

However, everyone seems to be making Type M 256MB-1GB cards.
Does this mean I cannot record movies when using a 512MB Type M XD card?

I have a couple of type M xD cards (512 Mb and 1 g) for my S5200 and they work fine. I'd be surprised if they don't work in the S5100. If I were you, I'd take the camera someplace where they'd let you try a type M card before you buy, or try to borrow one if you can. Failing that, send an e-mail to the Fuji service people and ask them if the type M card will work in your camera.
