These lenses are front mounted, not between the camera and the lens as in SLRs, thereby worsening the image.
If you double your focal length while keeping the aperture the same size only 1/4 the amount of light is now hitting the lens. You have lost 2 stops.

Thus, are they a good idea?

Who gave you those wrong ideas ?

Tcons mountedon digicams do not reduce the light hitting the sensor, at least not in any meaningful way.

A x1.7 tcon on a dslr would cost upto 2 stops of light, a x1.7 tcon mounted on my Sony H1 costs no stops .
