I have been scanning in old negatives and came across this one... This was taken with a plastic point and shoot FILM camera circa 1990.
Thought it was funny...

Is the handsome odd-one-out a ferret, or just a ferrety-looking other pet?

Cute as custard.

No....not a ferret...It's an Opossum, and not many people thought he was cute once he grew up. I suspect he seems cute in this photo because you can't see his entire body.
They actually make pretty good pets. Much like cats. They are clean, friendly (if you raise them from a young age) and can be easily litter-box trained.
I'll try to add more photos as I come across them and maybe add more as to why I had them as pets...

Hi Matek,

Have checked my mammel book & itdescribes 6 types of opossum out of a possible list of 70. Apparently some sorts weigh in at 5.5kg!!! Probably not quite as cute as custard.(To complicate matters, I once had a rat called Custard, but that's another story....) It would beinteresting to hear about your opossum & see pix of the full grown animal. They look amazing in the book.

Canna.

They're certainly nocturnal in the wild, but as pets, they tend to be more like cats...just laying around here and there during the day unless something gets their attention, or if you're playing with them. We also had cats at the time. They all got along great. As babies, they grab and cling to any passing cat to get a free ride...The cats didn't seem to mind.
Baby opossums are a lot like kittens. They get into a lot of trouble.
