Sure, 12x would be great, but can these lens perform just as well as a shorter (3x) lens typically seen on a more compact P&S? At it's widest angle, will the 12x P&S produce the same quality image as the 3x would at it's widest angle? Will the 12x produce as 'bright', 'sharp', andsimiliar distortion levelof a picture as the 3x?

It depends on the individual cameras. Some 12x zoom cameras will have much better lenses than some 3x zoom cameras, and vice versa.

yeah, i have a kodak p850 an 12x ultrazoom. Some images are a bit shoddy at the top zoom range and at the widest angle on the cmaera. This is one of the chaepest ultrazooms on the market and for its purpose its fine for me, it does the job. (although 5 megapixels is a bit lacklustre). If you invest in something like a Panasonic DMC-FZ30 which is one of the high end ultra zooms it'll beat a 3x zoom lens in all areas of the field.

I own two "ultra zooms" both Panasonic: DMC-FZ20 & the DMC-FZ30. The FZ20 is a Leica lensed (And yes, Leica says they both are Leica lenses), 36-432mm Image Stabilized, f/2.8 throughout out the entire zoom range camera. The FZ30 is a 35-420mm Image Stabilized Leica lens. Rather than talk, here is a wall sconce, 27 feet away & lit by the on-board FZ20 TTL flash: |
