Most likely it's not considered a current model. It just doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Hasn't been for a couple of months now, at least not from any authorized dealer in the US.
You can find it on ebay from a vendor in Hong Kong or Japan somewhere. |

I'm guessing by that you mean available in physical stores. What is the opinion of Steves-digicams.com on online stores? Clearly, best of the best should indicate what the best of class is, reguardless of wether a physical store carries it or not..
I can find the R1 online, instock for $610. I'm not trying to start an argument, or be derogatory, just curious =) |

While accessories for the R1 are listed on Sony's website, the camera itself is not. One can only conclude that it has been discontinued. Maybe that's why it didn't make the list.

It probably was on the list, at one point. He constantly updates it. The D50 used to be on the Best List, but not anymore. It was replaced by the D40. I won't be surprised if the R1 was dropped after Sony released the newer H1 and H5.

Pricegrabber right now lists one seller, a place called "retarded deals", which has it for $869, and which has no customer ratings at all. On the review page here, there's one listing for $1130, and one for $635. When I click on the $635 one, I get set to a page for the A-100, with this message: Sony Cybershot DSC-R1, 10.3 Megapixel, 5x Optical/2x Digital Zoom, Digital Camera DSCR1 has been discontinued from the manufacturer. You have been forwarded to the replacement model. If anyone has it at that price, I would at least check them out at resellerratings.com fist before ordering. At best it's probably a bait and switch. I haven't searched that thouroughly, but I know it mostly disappeared from pricegrabber 2-3 months ago. There were a few people around here who would have been happy to pay $799 if they were still available at that time. |
