just got ym casio ex s-500 (great camera by the way)

when its in my pocket/pouch it has a habit of turning on because i nudge the on button.then the lens tries to extend and a msg comes up sayin lens error and it turns off.

is this abd for the camera?or is it designed to cope with this sort of thing?

Well, its a failsafe. Its definitely not good for the camera, but I doubt it will damage it over the short - medium term. Its like when you press your cd rom tray in by hand, and not using the button. Except wit a lot more delicate equipment.

My advice: Try not to do it, but if it happens once in a while its not the end of the world.

Andyr - this type of camera has a pressure switch that stops the lens forward motion when starting up. It is the same drive mechanism that zooms the lens. Frequent resistance to this motion can't be doing the camera any good (common sense).

sooner or later, but sometime, it is going to malfunction by not extending or failing to retract. It will cost more than the camera is worth to fix it.

develop a method and manner of storing that will preclude this problem from happening..or pay the price, literally.

free advice is worth what you pay for it (sometimes).

Andy...

Suggest you buy an inexpensive generic case (got ours at Wal-Mart for $5) to protect the camera. It keeps the buttons protected from dirt and inadverdant pushing.
