I bought two different camera cases to choose the one I like. I like the smaller one better, but its a vertical style and I have to put the camera in on the side. Is the normal carrying force being applied in the sideway bad for the camera?

If it's a non DSLR then there is no issue. Even for a DSLR, the issue would only be if there is a lens attached with no support - thus putting uneven pressure on the lens mount (which I would think would not be ideal). But many digicam bags are designed for the camera to go in on the side.
