The articles on luminous landscape are very good, and if you want to see the source for much of their information, check out Adobe's white paper (pdf) on understanding digital raw capture

I'm using a 20D set to Raw/Superfine but I have never seen anything but JPG files when I download pictures to my computer.
I used a FW card reader to download my pictures last time and Canon's Image Browser software on my PM 2.0 G5 but still only saw JPGs. Why don't I ever get Raw files? Thanks for your thoughts, GeneL |

Just to be clear.
You take pictures in RAW mode, then put the CF card into a flash reader, and view it using the the windows explorer and the images are missing. Is that correct? Eric |

I just see the jpg files. Nothing else I dont know what you mean about using Explorer? As I said I use the Canon Image Browser software which has a RAW app included. I don't use Windows. I'm using OSX on a Mac.

I'm sorry, but you never said you were using the Mac. At least not in this message thread post. I just searched. You didn't give enough info before that we could help. Now we can do much more.
Unfortunately I don't know a lot about the mac (and my experience is back on OS 7.) But I seem to recall someone else here had a similar problem on their Windows PC. It turned out to be a setting in the camera that fixed the problem. I just checked the 20D manual and I think the menu setting is called "communication." It can either be "normal" or "PTP". It should be set to normal, I believe. But honestly I don't use the camera to read my CF cards. I use a flash card reader (which is much faster) so I can't have this problem. I would suggest you post your problem as a separate message thread, describing what you do now to view images. That way more people will see it... having it at the end of a long thread will cause it to be missed. I hope that helps. Eric |

Thanks Eric. I did mention that I was using a G5 in my original post. I was thinking that everyone here would know that a G5 was the latest in the PowerMac lineup. Also I mentioned that I, too was using a firewire flash reader. I will check the custom settings again as you suggest and also post my question as a separate topic. Thanks for your thoughts,
Gene |
