Hi all. I have started an environmental group in my county that is focused on helping widlife. I was thinking of putting on an amateur photo contest to try to encourage people to get out and discover the wildlife in their own yards. The winning photos will not only receive prizes but will be published on a calendar and possibly in a book.

Does anyone have any advice for me on how to hold such a contest? I know it sounds like a lot of work, but I think it might stir up some new awareness of the wildlife in our area.

Here are a copy of the rules I have come up with for the contest if anyone wants to add some input:

Great idea - I wish you the best of luck. One thought may be to have a category for people under say 15 years old and try and get the kids involved. If you could get permission from local schools to advertise there that would be a bonus. I was fortunate to get involved in scouting when I was about 12 and it helped develop an appreciation for wildlife that affects my decisions 20+ years later. Good luck!

You might want to say something about who owns the copyright. I think you want to be able to use the photos on a web site, a calandar, and a book. Just say that those are the only way you will use the photos.

A popular contest "scam" is that all rights to all photos entered belong to the folks holding the contest. The good ones are sold. You want to avoid looking like them.

The only way to get all of that into an iron-clad form is to talk to a intelectual property lawyer. I don't think you have to worry much about getting it really tight, but I could be wrong.
