well i never had problems with my digital camera getting erased and i just came back from a trip. I think the xray thing applies to regular film camera's and they give you warnings about that at the airports. Intresting enough I believe the wand they used on me killed my watch

I have taken my Coolpix 950 to China 3 times, going through many different airport check points. No problem with any security devices except on my 1999 trip the security guard dropped it at my first airport. (Here in the USA) I still remember her saying "It won't hurt it". The camera would only make a clicking sound when I turned it on. So... during my stay in China I bought many disposable cameras. The only good thing about this was Nikon fixed it for free after I told them what happened. Bottem line is don't worry about the metal detectors, its the security guards who may break your camera.
