Most landscape shots (most shots in general) will benefit from a tripod. However, with this lens, the DOF is so deep, even when slightly stopped down, this lens is a bit easier to handhold. I think you're lack of sharpness could be from a bad copy. I have heard a lot of reports of sample variation with this lens. My sample was good....you may have not been as lucky.
