Just throwing another idea into the thread. Is the lens glass? If it's plastic it's possible that the snore fluid stuff reacted with the suface of the lens itself and not just the coating.

Kaopectate in the crankcase? I'll bet that stopped up any oil leaks!!

I ASS-U-ME that it is glass, so I don't think it is likely that there was any kind of reaction unless it was with the lens coating. This is not an expensive camera, nor is it a cheap one. It otherwise gives very good picture quality.

One of the better phone calls to Car Talk I've ever listened to. Right up there with the guy who was changing the air filter on his car. He used a sports sock to block the tube that feeds air into the engine. He didn't want to risk dropping something, a screw or nut, into the engine. Well, you guessed it... he forgot the sock was there and replaced the filter. Sucked the nylon sports sock into the engine. Certainly makes some of my mistakes look easy in comparison.

these anti-snore sprays usually contain oily substances that are quite water resistant as well (in order to work properly and dissolve gradually in the nose).so my gues would be that it did not distroy the lens, just made it greasy and it will eventually come off.

That's good news indeed! I hope this is the case. I am telling my friend to try some Windex with it and use a facial tissue NOT PAPER TOWEL :-)and not to rub too much.

Reviving this topic. I finally had the damaged camera in my hand this week and found that the lens was actually damaged somehow and not just oily from the anti-snore stuff. I don't know how but the coating was actually damaged.
As I mentioned before, I took with me the CD polish and rubbed and rubbed and rubbed and then rubbed some more. The lens coating is gone for good but at least the camera is usable again. Since I can't possibly polish the lens evenly, there are spots here and there that are a bit blurry but at least pictures don't come out foggy as the example I posted earlier. I am including a picture taken after I fixed the lens. |
