Hello, I'm new to this forum and am thinking about buying a Canon 5D. Is this particular model made inJapan? or elsewhere? Thanks.

Since Canon is located in Japan, I assume the cameras are also manufactured there. Or at least in Asia.
But why should that matter? Japan and Taiwan produce almost everything. Think about Sony. They're japanese, too and they're pretty good. Of course, Canon is not as famous as Hasselblad or Leica, but it's cheaper ;-) |

Thanks for the reply. I have several late model Olympus cameras that are made in China and older 35mm film cameras (Nikon, Olympus OM-1, Canon EOS) that are made in Japan. In recent years, due to lower labor costs, many manufacturers have opened plants in China, Malaysia, Singapore etc. The products made in these places are under strict quality control and are every bit as good as if there were made in Japan where labor costs are high. This not only applies to cameras but computers, appliances, electronics and almost anything else you can think of. There still remains a stigma however that products that are still made in Japan are ofhigher quality - to me it doesn't matter, but I am aware of this stigma and was just curious.

I don't think that all these new digital cameras would be affordable if they would be made in USA or Europe. Just check out the price of a Leica...
I just looked under my EOS 350D (aka Digital Rebel XT, aka Kiss 'n Digital) and it says made in Japan. So I definetively assume that the 5D is also made in Japan. |

Made or assembled? Nikon, for example, assembles some of it's dSLR's in Thailand, but some of the assemblies, I believe, come in from Japan, or elsewhere.

Nowadays, sometimes the parts are made in Japan and assembled in
China. As someone said, the issue of quality control is a serious one. I am sure even if the 5D was made elsewhere, the parent company would ensure that the product is of quality make. So the place of origin does not really matter. Kind regards. |
