Default canon battery low ball scam??!!

I just ordered my G3 from butterfly photo and they informed me that canon only provides a battery that last for 30 minutes. Now I would have to buy a 2 hour battery for 60 bucks!! Is this true!!

The battery life of the supplied BP-511 battery is actually very good. Personally, I'd consider cancelling the order and switching vendors. I don't like salespeople that use these types of tactics.

Although, it's always a good idea to have a spare.

It sound like the salesman probably makes commissions off the extras (or has to have a certain number of items in the order to quality for a higher percentage commission).

If you decide to buy from them anyway, make sure you're not being sold an aftermarket battery instead (which can be purchased for under $30.00). $60.00 is fair for a genuine Canon BP-511.

You can see the battery life tests in Phil Askey's review of the Canon G3 here (Phil got over 4 hours in his tests -- near the best in it's class). So, IMO, the salesperson was "full of it", and just trying to make some extra money.

Ebay sellers have been selling generic batteries for the Canon's for far cheaper than store prices. I guess they work just as well as the outrageous priced ones. Go check it out.

You could also consider a third party battery Hahnel has the hl-511 as cheap alternative for Canon BP-511 . The HL has even more mA
1300 versus Canon 1100mA.

B&H Photo is selling an after market 511 that is 1500mAh.

Also, www.batterybarn.com sells several (I've never purchased from them.) As does http://www.thomas-distributing.com.

I got one from there (when I got my Maha charger.) I wasn't thrilled in the beginning... life seemed very short. I realize it takes 2-3 charges before getting to full capacity, but this was shockingly low. It does seem better now.... we'll see.
