Could anyone give me some tips on buying a filter (58mm) for my camera. I have no idea what to get, since there are so many different types. I think I just need one for protection. Thanks in advance.

Just get a UV filter for protection. There is nearly zero light loss except for the glass itself and it is cheap to replace. Go with a decent quality to get a good coating and good optical quality. Can’t go wrong with Hoya and Tiffen.
