Default Coolpix 990 techies: software or hardware problem?

I've got a heretofore trusty 990 (three years old now) that just this week has developed the quirk of only operating on "A" mode; when switching to "M", it just stays on Automatic, and if I try to switch to Play, the top LCD and back window go black...wuzzup?

It's still working on the "A" mode, and I need it daily for work so I'm reticent to ship it back to Nikon these days; kind of hoping it's something I can address myself.

Appreciate any advice!

I've never heard of it happening to a 990, but the 950's sometimes had mode switch problems (oxidation).

Here's a link on repairing the 950, but I don't know if it's applicable to the 990 (it sounds like it could be the switch contacts, though)

I had this problem with a CP950: the Play position became unreliable at under a year old. The problem spread to the M
position of the switch, so I had it repaired by Nikon.

When the same thing happened with my CP995, I had it
repaired under warranty before it worsened.

So it it seems possible that the well-known CP950 problem
could occur with a 990 - is anything known about the CP4500?

best regards
