can someone tell me the differnce in the nikon d40 and the nikon d40x?thanks

The biggest difference is that the D40 is using a Sony 6 Megapixel CCD, and the D40x is using a Sony 10 Megapixel CCD (the D40x is a higher resolution camera).

There are a number of smaller differences, too (for example, flash sync speed, lowest available ISO speed, fastest cycle times).

I'd check out their reviews here, looking at each review's conclusion section (last page before the sample images) for more detail on how each one performs.
