Default Digital Point and Shoot for Beginner?

Hey, gang. I'm interested in getting a point and shoot digital for my wife for Christmas. Certain things are a must: a) Maximum 4 megapixel, b) Fairly large camera body(she tends to lose things if they're too small), c) Fairly simple to operate (not technically patient), d) Considering the above, best resolution possible, e) zoom at least 3X, f) as sturdy as possible, given the above, and g) maximum is $350 for a used model (that might translate into $500 - $550 new). Any suggestions?

Remember you have to add the cost of a memory card with any camera you buy and for a charger and batteries for cameras that donít come with a charger.

I think your best bet would be a Minolta S414. It is 4Mp and has a 4X optical zoom. The camera sells for well under $300 online, which is a bargain. Put it in auto and it will work like a point and shoot camera. It has plenty of user controls if she wants to grow into them. http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/s414.html Set it up for her to use continuous focus Ė it uses more battery but will give a lot fewer out of focus subjects.

You would want a 256Mb CF card and at least one set of NiMH AA batteries and a charger. Spares are cheap so an extra set is a good idea. Consider the Maha charger with 8 PowerX 2200mAH batteries. You can get by with four batteries as those have a lot of power: http://www.thomas-distributing.com/m...20dc.htm#combo
