Like JimC, I keep the digital zoom turned off to keep from using it accidentally.

Digital Zoom seems to have two main uses:
*- Marketing to the "More is Better" crowd
*- Using 3x digital zoom to turn a 9Mpixel camera into a 1Mpixel camera

As Greg noted, there *might be* an advantage in metering with digital zoom - though that would depend on how the camera's metering works. In difficult metering situations I prefer using manual settings and would strongly recomend that approach. Even if digital zoom does solve some metering problems, it will not solve them all.

I have found digital zoom useful on only one occasion, while on holiday in the far north of Scotland last summer. It settled a family argument.
Not sure I would have settled the argument using the digital zoom the way you did Alan. I would have tried renting a boat and gone over to check it out, just think on all the extra photo opt's.:G
