Have any of you ever visited places which were very arid and no greenery with lots of rocks, with a camera in hand? (Some parts of the Mid-East and N. Africa come to mind)

Any WB settings for this type of situation.

It is the color of the light that you are concerned with, not the color of the scenery. The standard settings of sunlight or cloudy should work if it is a sunny day. The cloudy setting will give a slightly warmer picture. To be most accurate, follow your camera manual for manually taking a white balance reading from a piece of white paper or something else white and setting it into the camera. That procedure will give the most accurate results under any conditions, day or night.
