Default Help with software process

I'm new at this and need help from someone who could take me through the general process of downloading digital picutres and then running them through a program such as qimage. Iv'e taken many pics and I have learned to fool around with these programs but I have to believe that there exists some logical paths to take to get the best results. ie, do I adjust color, then brightness or what. Thanks to the pros out there.

First thing I do after downloading a set of pics is to copy the entire batch somewhere else, so I have original, untouched copies.

One of the most important things you have to do is callibrate what you see on the screen, so you have an accurate representation of the picture through your monitor.

Depending on your monitor and video card you may need to adjust settings in both areas. There are also callibration utilites some of the more advanced posters have mentioned, but I have never used those yet.

I don't know what editor you are using, but in Photoshop I have the picture on screen and I just make one adjustment at a time to see how it looks. In most cases the less drastic changes I make, the better the picture looks in most cases and the minor tweaks seem to produce the best results.
