How much of an upgrade it is from the 18-55 canon kit? (500D kit). |

It's quite a lot sharper and also being f2.8 you can get faster shutter speeds if using f2.8 is OK (not always good for groups as you need a wider depth of field). What it doesn't have is IS so it's not clear cut.
I would generally rather use the Tamron for the quality and the ability to have f2.8 over the kit lens.
