Default Maintenance on an older lens

I bought a lens off eBay and in general the lens appears to be in good shape and functions properly. The only thing I can find that needs to be addressed is when I go to put it on the camera body. It doesn't go on as smoothly as my newer lenses. It is a Minolta Maxxum lens and I'm using it on a Sony Alpha camera. I am afraid to put any lubricant on it without some advice.

My advice is to keep it clean and dry. Check the mount to see if it's been deformed in any way. If it has a snug fit, so be it.
  • The lens is the thing.
  • 'Full Frame' is the new 'Medium Format'.

What I would do in this case, would be to run my finger around the mounting flange on the lens, feeling for roughness or burrs. Someone may have forced the lens on at one time, with a piece of grit in between, and left a burr. If this is the case, and you feel comfortable with doing it, you can polish the burr out with a fine India stone, or 1600 grit paper or crocus cloth wrapped tightly around a dowel . Be sure to keep the lens positioned so any debris falls out. Wipe carefully afterwards with a lint free cotton rag which has a couple drops of machine oil .
If you don't care to try it yourself, a camera shop should be able to help.
