Watching Euro 2004 I noticed most of the photographers sitting at the goals have massive white lenses. I've seen lots of professional photographers with these to. Why? I know why they are massive. But why are they white? Is it just a case of "Look everyone, my lens is white and yours is black. I win!!! Ner ner ne ner ner!"?

Those are Canon Lens'.

They are white for two reasons. One so you can tell them apart from everyone elses black lenses, Two it help keep the lens cool. Less strain on the optics and when you are shooting all-day in the sun, it makes the surface cooler so you can grab the lens and it doens't make you go "Ouch that;s HOT!!"

billy is right, those are canonL lenses

canon has adds like "how many of our lenses can you count?", and stuff like that...

nikon makes white lenses too, but there special order

it helps keep the lenses cool, too....

Hey Ferny - as soon as I saw the title of your post I knew what you were talking about. That lensgot my attention as well. Out of curiosity I thought I'd do a little internet tripping to see what one of these monsters would cost. One site offers the Nikon or Canon 1000 & 1200mm lens for RENT at $175 a day. Ouch. :?

ferny. You knowyou're a photographer when you spend more time looking at the cameras than watching the match. :-)

Ha ha, ain't that the truth!

Thanks for that. I don't think they're exclusive to Canon and Nikon as Minolta make them and I've seen third party ones to. I'm not saying Canon didn't think of it first and people copied it either. That is interesting about the heat. I wouldn't have thought of that without some concentration. I've seen these type of lenses run into four figure sums. Um, I think I better save my pocket money for a while.

ya, the bigest one canon makes is a 1200mm f/5.something or another

btw, there not white, there gray.....;)
